St Mirren Break Kelty Hearts.

Updated: Mar 30, 2022

Paisley would be the last stop for Kelty Hearts fairytale journey, in the Scottish Cup. St Mirren proved to be too strong for them, as the in-form Premiership side would win 4-0 to coast into the Quarter Finals.

Kelty famously knocked out Double Cup Holders, St Johnstone in the previous round, and would see them arrange free buses for the trip to Paisley to thank the continued support from the small village in which they are based.

A cagey start from both teams would lead to some anxious voices from the home support. Tensions eased on the 15 minute mark, when Alex Greive put The Buddies ahead after nodding home from close range, after some scrappy play, in the box. 1-0 St Mirren.

The rest of the first half was uneventful, much to the frustration of the home support who felt that they should be going in for the kill and put the tie to bed. St Mirren were in complete control of possession, but unable to capitalise on the grip they had on the game.

The second half would see the Paisley side come out with intent. It would only take five minutes after the restart for Jordan Jones to score a superb long-range effort from a difficult angle, to double St Mirren's lead.

The 58th minute would see The Buddies really put the game to bed, and kill any chance of a Kelty comeback. Another effort from outside the box, this time by Greg Kiltie, who saw his shot slot into the bottom left corner, 3-0.

Kelty had the chance to pull a goal back from a freekick, but Kallum Higginbotham saw his effort easily saved by Alnwick.

Kelty Hearts will be disappointed by the way they conceded the fourth and final goal of the day. St Mirren pressed the in-possession Kelty defence, goalkeeper Jamieson was anticipating a pass-back, and would be standing on the by-line at the edge of the box. The ball would instead be squared across to the 'D', where Kiltie would get on the end of it, slotting home an 18-yard effort into an empty net, on the 85th minute.

A convincing win in the end for St Mirren, who were in complete control. Kelty Hearts can be proud of their efforts throughout the competition, particularly knocking out Cup Holders, St Johnstone. Their efforts will now be turned to securing promotion, as they sit ten points clear of Scottish League Two.
