The Dundee Derby is one of the most unique encounters in British football. Both clubs stadia are on the same street, separated by only 352 yards.
Dundee Derby Day traditionally starts with the away team walking along the street to the opposing venue. Meaning the Dundee FC players and staff, made the famous walk along from Dens Park, to Dundee United's Tannadice Stadium.
This was the first Derby game since 2019, and the first top flight Derby in more than five years. The atmosphere was building rapidly before kick-off, with a fine tifo display for the players walking out of the tunnel. A minute applause was held in memory of Dundee United's most successful manager, Jim McLean, to continue the celebrations of the unveiling of his statue before kick-off.
Both teams had chances inside the first few minutes, but neither could capitalise. Dundee's Leigh Griffiths could've put his side infront on a couple of occasions, but he brought more of his sideshow that his shooting boots, with the constant heckling.
A typical Derby game, with nine fouls in the first 20 minutes.
Both teams had the chance to go in at half-time with the lead. United's Charlie Mulgrew coming closest when he sent his 35 yard free-kick just wide.
The second half was a slow start, with the first attempt on goal coming in the 63rd minute.
Dundee didn't come out the traps for the second half, but almost took the lead on the 73rd minute. Shaun Byrne saw his effort from 15 yards blocked by United defender Edwards, before Griffiths skied the rebound from close range.
The decisive moment came on the 80th minute when Harkes fired a shot too powerful for the Dundee goalkeeper, who got a hand to it but couldn't keep it out.
Dundee had two great chances to equalise. Impeccable defending from Mulgrew saw a well timed challenge stop Sheridan scoring a certain goal.
Followed by the last action of the game, which saw United's Edwards clear Marshall's shot off the line.
Dundee United win 1-0, leaving Dundee still without a win this season, after promotion.
What may be an even more bitter taste in the mouth of The Dee supporters, they haven't won at their rivals ground in 17 years.
The game may not have been the best, but a sold out Tannadice on Derby Day, was pretty special.
